Day 0 – French border to Irun, 2.0km, 0.5hrs, 19 April

We had a fantastic sleep in at the Pension San Memés in Bilbao this morning. That’s our last good sleep for at least the next month. After a brunch and lunch (we’re carbo loading!), we caught the Alsa bus to Irun.  It’s a 90 minute ride for less than 4€ on a very comfortable bus.

Once in Irun, we checked into the Pension Lizaso (50€) and looked for an open church to get our first stamp in the credencials. That proved tougher than planned, even in Catholic Spain.  Eventually we got into a church at evening adoration and found a priest.  With the stamp of the Sagrada Familia church now in our credencials, we are officially on our way.

We also walked across the French border into Hendaye, just to say that we again began our walk in France.  The bridge between the countries here is, of course, Santiago’s Bridge.

Looking at tomorrow’s walk.  We will be climbing, then following the ridge of that mountain in the distance most of the day.

  1. I walked that walkway in January all the way to the end! However the ferry from Hondaribia was cancelled due to repairs needed! I am so happy you are walking the Norte! Enjoy the views! Soak them in!
